I was accepted to the Polytechnic school in Grenoble, France but I arrived late for the beginning of the year. The delay was caused by the conscription to the Polish army. They did not take me because the quota was already full. I arrived late, and without any knowledge of French.
Further stories of his time in school in France, and how he managed to pass the bi-monthly exams and study on his own the French dictionary. He finished the year with adequate grades.
A Holiday in Kobryn
I immediately left for Paris, took the train to Warsaw (36 hours) and then to Kobryn – four-and-a-half hours. He stopped to visit his father's sister, Rivka, in Warsaw, to eat. Upon arriving in Kobryn I rode a bicycle to the village where Rachel was on vacation from teaching in a primary school. I rode over there every day. When she returned to her parents' home we met at her there. When she started the school year, I worked half a day at a watch repair shop with great success. In all Betzalel spent 4 months in Kobryn and then returned to his second year in France.
Experiences in France – trips, mountain-climbing, etc.
…I finished my studies in Grenoble. I did not return straight to Kobryn, as Rachel was already in Eretz Israel, where she went the previous year. She was on a Kibbutz.
I met my father in Kraków and spent some days with him and then continued to Kobryn. … The shortest way of getting a permit to make aliya at that time was to be admitted either to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem or to the Technion in Haifa. I tried for the Technion and had to pay a lump sum of money, which my father gave me.
Once I was in the land, Rachel and I got married.
About his life in the Land of Israel, and the institutes of vocational and technical education that he established there.
